“Tech Trend: Wireless Headphones Struggle with Sound Quality”

In the past six months, I have tested various earphones and headphones, from popular models like OnePlus Buds 4 to premium options like Sonos Ace. Despite offering unique features and justifying their prices with sleek designs and convenience, most of these audio devices have a common issue – they sound somewhat generic. None of them can deliver the rich sound quality that wired headphones priced at Rs 20,000 or Rs 30,000 could a decade ago.

This lack of distinct sound quality is disappointing because exceptional sound can truly immerse listeners in music. When I mention feeling the music, I’m not referring to just the bass. Many audio companies prioritize bass, considering it a crucial element. Bass is prevalent in modern music genres like hip-hop, Bollywood, pop, and EDM, prompting headphone manufacturers to focus on enhancing bass output.

Most headphones nowadays share a similar sound profile dominated by heavy bass. Premium products may also emphasize mid-range tones to achieve a better balance. This tuning, facilitated by Bluetooth limitations and the closed design of headphones, results in a homogenous sound across price ranges.

To stand out in the market, companies emphasize smart features, noise cancellation, and design. Sony, for instance, has excelled in noise cancellation with its MX series, particularly the new WH-1000XM6 headphones. Other brands like Bose and Sonos leverage noise cancellation and innovative features to attract consumers.

While today’s audio products excel in various aspects, they fall short in sound quality compared to older wired headphones. The current wireless audio trend prioritizes convenience over sound quality, leading to compressed soundstages, constrained vocals, and muddled instrumentals.

Mainstream audio products in India lack prominent brands, limiting options for audiophiles. However, there are promising developments from companies like JBL and Noise. JBL’s Tour Pro 3 earbuds have garnered praise for their sound quality, surpassing larger competitors. Noise aims to elevate the market with its Master Buds series, offering sound tuned by Bose.

Despite advancements, the focus on sound quality needs a revival in the industry. Technical constraints such as noise cancellation requirements and Bluetooth limitations hinder sound fidelity. Overcoming these challenges can differentiate products and satisfy consumers seeking superior sound experiences.
