Elon Musk’s Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt. Ltd., a satellite internet company, is set to kick off its operations officially in India. The company has initiated technical and security demonstrations in Mumbai this week, marking a significant step towards launching satellite internet services in the country.
Establishing its initial office in Mumbai, Starlink has secured a 1,294 square feet office space in Chandivali area for approximately Rs 2.33 crore for a five-year lease. This move signifies Starlink’s official presence in India, a strategic move as it gears up to introduce high-speed internet services utilizing satellite technology.
Currently, the company is conducting demonstration sessions in Mumbai on October 30 and 31 to exhibit the capabilities of its satellite network. The trials aim to showcase how Starlink’s technology can deliver fast and reliable internet services, particularly in remote areas where traditional broadband connections are limited.
Reports indicate that Starlink intends to establish gateway stations in nine cities, including Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Kolkata, and Lucknow. These stations will facilitate the connection of satellite signals to users nationwide. Pending the finalization of pricing guidelines by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for satellite-based services, Starlink is anticipated to commence commercial operations in early 2026, potentially by January or February.
Awaiting government approvals and spectrum clearances, Starlink is positioned to introduce significant competition to India’s emerging satellite internet sector. Industry experts foresee that Starlink’s entry could revolutionize internet accessibility, particularly in rural and remote areas, bridging the digital gap and providing reliable connectivity to regions historically underserved by traditional networks.
