India’s veteran ODI player and former captain, Rohit Sharma, has addressed the ongoing speculation about his future in the 50-over format in a touching manner. During a conversation with a Make-A-Wish child, Rohit assured that he is committed to playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup to help India secure the elusive trophy.
In a viral video, a young fan asked Rohit if he would still be participating in the upcoming World Cup. Rohit responded with a smile, affirming his determination to be part of the tournament and strive to bring the coveted trophy home.
The video, believed to be from September, captures Rohit Sharma’s visit to the Make-a-Wish foundation in Mumbai, where he interacted with children.
Having come close to realizing his World Cup dream in 2023, when India lost to Australia in the final, the 38-year-old opener has faced ongoing discussions about his future in ODIs. Following his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year and T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup victory, Rohit Sharma and his longtime teammate Virat Kohli have focused on ODIs as their only active format.
Rohit and Kohli are preparing for their first international assignment since the Champions Trophy victory, leading India in the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia. This series is seen as an initial step in their journey towards the 2027 World Cup.
Travis Head, an Australian cricketer, has also speculated that Rohit Sharma will continue playing until the 2027 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s ODI captain, marking the beginning of a new leadership era while retaining the experience of Rohit and Kohli to guide the young squad in challenging overseas tours.
Rohit Sharma has undergone training with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, shedding nearly 10 kilograms ahead of the Australian series. The focus now shifts to Rohit’s performance in the ODI series starting in Perth on October 19, as Indian fans eagerly anticipate his role in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
