Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed confidence in all-rounder Nitish Reddy’s potential to excel across all formats as he handed Reddy his ODI debut cap. Reddy marked his debut in the 50-over format on October 19 during the first ODI against Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth. Notably, Reddy also debuted at the same venue during the Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in November 2024.
Reddy received his debut caps from two Indian cricket legends, with Virat Kohli presenting his Test debut cap and Rohit Sharma granting his ODI debut cap. Sharma commended Reddy for his dedication to the game and predicted a successful future as an all-format player.
In a video shared by the BCCI, Sharma welcomed Reddy to the team, stating, “You had a great start to your career because of your attitude and commitment to the game. I truly believe you will become an all-format great player, as you aspire to be everywhere on the field. The team will fully support you, and I wish you a successful career.”
On his ODI debut, Reddy played a crucial role by contributing 19 runs off 11 balls, including two sixes, batting lower in the order. Despite his efforts, India posted 136/9 in the rain-affected 26-over game. Reddy bowled 2.1 overs, conceding 16 runs without taking any wickets, as Australia successfully chased down the target in 21.1 overs, securing a seven-wicket victory.
