A segment of a 20-story high-rise building in New York City crumbled early on Wednesday, resulting in a portion of the structure being turned into debris. The incident unfolded at the Mitchel Houses in the Bronx at approximately 8:10 am.
The city’s fire department indicated that there were no immediate signs of injuries. Authorities reacted to a gas explosion report that led to the collapse of an incinerator shaft within the city-owned public housing complex. It was verified that no residential units were harmed. Various attempts to obtain comments from the Housing Authority were made.
Videos taken at the location revealed that a corner of the building had collapsed from the ground level to the roof, with a cloud of dust spreading across the vicinity shortly after the event. Residents recorded compelling footage showcasing the extent of the destruction.
Mayor Eric Adams disclosed that he had been briefed on the emergency and that officials were currently evaluating the situation. “For your safety, please steer clear of the area,” he advised.
City police disclosed that they received multiple 911 calls concerning the building’s collapse shortly after 8 a.m. “Upon arrival, officers witnessed a partial building collapse,” the department stated.
In New York City buildings, incinerator shafts, previously employed for on-site trash incineration, have predominantly been replaced by contemporary trash compactors, although some older buildings still utilize similar chutes.
New York City Emergency Management cautioned drivers to expect traffic congestion and the presence of emergency personnel near Alexander Avenue and East 135th Street, where the incident occurred, as reported by the BBC.
This incident evokes memories of other recent high-rise events in the city. In July 2023, a towering construction crane ignited above Manhattan’s West Side, breaking off, colliding with a nearby building, and then falling to the ground. Several individuals sustained minor injuries during that episode, but no fatalities were recorded.
