OpenAI is actively working on several projects, with one of its most ambitious endeavors being the development of an AI researcher. The company recently announced its plans to create an AI-powered intern-level research assistant by September 2026, followed by a more advanced “legitimate AI researcher” targeted for completion by 2028.
During a livestream event, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, discussed the future of artificial intelligence, emphasizing the goal of expanding their models beyond text and image generation to handle substantial research tasks effectively.
Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki shared insights into the long-term vision for AI, aiming to develop a system capable of independently running research projects, designing experiments, testing hypotheses, and generating scientific discoveries. While acknowledging the ambitious nature of this objective, OpenAI believes it is feasible with sustained research efforts and investment.
To achieve this goal, OpenAI is focusing on two key strategies. Firstly, continuous algorithmic innovation to enhance learning efficiency and reasoning capabilities. Secondly, a significant increase in ‘test-time compute’ to provide AI models with greater computational power and time for problem-solving, enabling them to tackle complex scientific challenges.
Securing resources for such advancements will require substantial investment. Altman highlighted that OpenAI’s new for-profit structure allows for larger investment rounds to fund projects like building 30 gigawatts of computing infrastructure, estimated at around $1.4 trillion. This level of computational capacity is crucial for AI models to function as scientists rather than mere assistants.
OpenAI emphasizes that the development of these advanced AI systems is not just a display of technical prowess but a means to accelerate real-world research in various fields such as material discovery, medical treatments, and energy system optimization. The company’s non-profit arm, the OpenAI Foundation, will oversee a $25 billion fund dedicated to AI-driven scientific research and safety.
Despite the ambitious timeline, OpenAI remains committed to responsible progress, ensuring public oversight and societal benefit. The company’s structure is designed to balance rapid advancements with ensuring that AI breakthroughs serve the greater good. In a blog post, OpenAI reiterated its goal of creating AI that benefits everyone.
