Kaif Criticizes Gill’s Decision in ODI Opener

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has criticized India’s captain Shubman Gill for omitting Kuldeep Yadav from the lineup during the initial ODI against Australia in Perth. The Indian team suffered a defeat of seven wickets in the series opener, marking a disappointing start to Gill’s captaincy in the ODI format. Opting to bat first, India managed to score only 136/9 in the rain-affected 26-over match and failed to defend the total.

Expressing his discontent after the loss, Kaif questioned Gill’s decision to sideline Kuldeep, emphasizing the spinner’s ability to take crucial wickets. He referenced the success of legendary bowler Shane Warne in various formats in Australia to highlight the importance of having a wicket-taking bowler in the team.

Kaif praised Kuldeep’s recent outstanding form, particularly noting his significant contributions during India’s triumph in the Asia Cup 2025. The left-arm spinner emerged as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament, claiming 17 wickets from seven innings at an impressive average of 9.29 and an economy rate of 6.27.

Moreover, Kuldeep showcased his prowess by finishing as the top wicket-taker in the recent Test series against West Indies, securing 12 wickets from four innings, with a notable best figure of 5/82. He also boasts an excellent record against Australia in ODIs, having taken 31 wickets from 23 matches.

Kaif underscored the importance of the bowlers stepping up in the absence of key players like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami to secure victories. He pointed out the need for specialized bowlers in the team, highlighting the challenges faced by part-time bowlers like Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar in adverse pitch conditions.

In the first ODI, India introduced three all-rounders into the lineup, including debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy along with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar to bolster the batting order. However, their efforts fell short in the challenging conditions of Perth, resulting in a below-par total.

As India contemplates their next move following the defeat, the focus shifts to whether changes will be made to the team composition for the upcoming second ODI scheduled for October 23 in Adelaide.
