External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in discussions with US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor on Saturday amidst tensions over the US imposing 50% tariffs on Indian exports. Gor, accompanied by Michael J Rigas, Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources, is currently in New Delhi for a six-day visit following his confirmation by the Senate as the US envoy to India.
“Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance,” Jaishankar shared on social media, extending his best wishes for Gor’s new role.
The relationship between New Delhi and Washington has been strained, notably with President Donald Trump’s tariff increases on Indian goods, including additional duties on Russian crude oil purchases. India criticized these actions as unfair and unreasonable. However, recent phone conversations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump have sparked optimism for a positive outcome in the ongoing trade negotiations.
After a brief pause, India and the US have resumed talks for a trade deal. Gor, a key figure in Trump’s administration, expressed gratitude for his nomination as the US ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. The US Senate has now confirmed his appointment.
During his visit to New Delhi, Gor will not formally present his credentials as the US envoy.
