“Harmanpreet laments pivotal moment as India falls short vs England”

Harmanpreet Kaur highlighted that the pivotal moment in India’s narrow four-run loss to England in the Women’s World Cup encounter at Holkar Stadium in Indore was when Smriti Mandhana was dismissed. Mandhana’s impressive 88-run knock off 94 deliveries was halted by Linsey Smith, which led to India struggling at needing 55 runs off 52 balls while chasing a target of 289.

Despite a strong partnership of 125 runs between Mandhana and Harmanpreet following early setbacks, India’s batting efforts fell short. Expressing disappointment, Harmanpreet acknowledged feeling heartbroken as their hard work in the chase did not culminate in the desired outcome. She credited England for their relentless bowling performance that disrupted India’s momentum in the crucial final overs.

“Smriti’s dismissal shifted the game’s momentum. Even though we had capable batters remaining, the match took an unexpected turn. England’s persistent bowling and knack for taking wickets played a significant role. It’s disheartening when your efforts don’t translate into success, especially in the decisive moments,” Harmanpreet lamented during the post-match presentation.

Looking ahead, India, after wins over Sri Lanka and Pakistan, faced consecutive defeats against South Africa, Australia, and England. Harmanpreet, who contributed a run-a-ball 70, emphasized the need for India to regroup before their upcoming clash with New Zealand on October 23 in Navi Mumbai.

“We are displaying good cricket and fighting till the end, but we must convert that into victories. Despite showcasing strong performances in the last three games, we fell short. The upcoming match is crucial for us. Our bowlers performed admirably, particularly against Heather Knight. Although we did many things right, we need to address our performance in the final overs. The match against New Zealand holds significant importance,” Harmanpreet stressed.

Following the defeat against England, India currently holds the fourth spot in the standings with four points and a net run rate of +0.526. Their next challenges will be against New Zealand and Bangladesh led by Nigar Sultana Joty.
