Graham Potter Takes Helm of Sweden’s National Team

Sweden has announced Graham Potter, the former manager of Chelsea and West Ham United, as the new head coach of the national football team shortly after his dismissal from West Ham. Potter takes over from Jon Dahl Tomasson following Sweden’s poor start in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where they currently sit at the bottom of Group B with only one point from four games. The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) has appointed Potter to enhance their chances of qualifying during this crucial period.

Potter faces the challenge of guiding Sweden to the next World Cup. His contract extends through the remaining qualifiers, potential playoffs, and the tournament itself if Sweden secures a spot. The SvFF is relying on Potter’s knowledge of Swedish football to improve the team’s performance.

Having previously managed Ostersunds FK for seven years, Potter returns to Sweden with a wealth of experience. He notably led the club to Europa League football before moving on to managerial roles in England with clubs like Swansea City, Brighton, Chelsea, and West Ham United. Despite his brief spells at Chelsea and West Ham, Potter is determined to make an impact with the Swedish national team.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Potter stated, “I am very honored and motivated by this opportunity.” He emphasized the quality of Swedish players competing in top leagues and aims to elevate the team’s performance for a successful World Cup qualification.

The SvFF values Potter’s familiarity with Swedish football culture and tactical acumen as crucial assets in reviving Sweden’s qualification campaign. Simon Åström, the chairman of the Swedish Football Association, affirmed their commitment to reaching the World Cup next summer, highlighting the strategic decision to appoint Potter based on his proven leadership at the highest level.

The appointment of Graham Potter signals a new chapter for Swedish football as they strive to secure their place in the upcoming World Cup.
