Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud division of Amazon, faced a major outage causing disruptions for millions of users and businesses worldwide. The incident impacted various popular websites and apps like Fortnite, Snapchat, Robinhood, Coinbase, Roblox, Venmo, and others, showcasing the widespread reach of the outage.
The outage, centered in the US-East-1 region in Northern Virginia, resulted in increased error rates and latencies across key AWS services. The root cause was linked to DNS resolution issues with the DynamoDB API endpoint, affecting multiple online platforms. While AWS reported early signs of recovery for some services, engineers continued to work on resolving the remaining issues.
Numerous tech giants and startups relying on AWS, such as Amazon.com, Fortnite, Snapchat, Coinbase, and others, were affected by the outage. The disruption was also confirmed by Perplexity AI’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, stating their startup was impacted and efforts were underway to address the situation.
Reports from outage tracker DownDetector indicated over 5,800 users faced problems with AWS, with Amazon.com receiving over 14,000 reports. The US-East-1 region experienced the highest percentage of disruptions, followed by US-West-1 and US-West-2, indicating a ripple effect across the country.
AWS engineers worked on resolving the issue throughout the day, noting partial recovery in some services but continued connectivity issues for global platforms. The incident underscored the critical reliance of modern digital services on cloud infrastructure provided by AWS, which offers computing power, data storage, and networking services to a diverse range of customers worldwide.
