Former Member of Parliament from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna, who was handed a life sentence in a rape case, has filed an appeal with the Karnataka High Court contesting the decision of the lower court. Revanna, in his plea, has raised concerns about the prosecution’s case, emphasizing delays and alleged inconsistencies in the evidence presented.
He highlighted that the First Information Report (FIR) suggested that a woman was exploited for political reasons, yet she was reportedly present at a housewarming event at a farmhouse in 2023, three years after the purported incident, which he believes weakens the accusation.
The appeal also pointed out that the police only registered the complaint three years after the incident occurred. Revanna’s legal team also highlighted discrepancies in the evidence, noting that the woman failed to recognize certain items like clothes and a bag discovered in a storage room.
Moreover, the petition mentioned that the mobile phone said to contain a video was never confiscated, and doubts were raised about semen-stained clothes allegedly recovered from a locked room due to contradictions in the forensic report.
Revanna has urged the High Court to reconsider the case and overturn the conviction. Earlier on August 2, Prajwal was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 11 lakh for sexually assaulting a 47-year-old domestic worker in Mysuru and filming the crime. The fine is designated as compensation for the survivor.
