“Disrupted Procession in Leh, Peaceful March in Kargil”

A planned silent procession in Leh organized by Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) to advocate for statehood and protections under the sixth schedule of the constitution was disrupted due to heightened security measures and suspension of mobile internet services. However, Kargil saw a peaceful demonstration where KDA leaders expressed disapproval of the restrictions in Leh but welcomed the initiation of a judicial inquiry into the September 24 shooting incident that resulted in multiple casualties and injuries.

Security forces were heavily deployed in Leh and nearby areas in response to a call by the protesting groups for a two-hour silent march starting at 10 am and a three-hour blackout from 6 pm throughout Ladakh to show solidarity with the victims of the violent events on September 24, including those who lost their lives, were wounded, or were unlawfully detained.

Citing concerns about maintaining law and order, officials imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS in Leh, cut off mobile internet services, and directed the closure of educational institutions. Anjuman Imamia president and LAB member Ashraf Ali Barcha expressed disappointment, stating that the administration’s heavy-handed approach prevented the peaceful expression of demands through the planned silent march.

Anjuman Moin ul Islam leader Abdul Qayoom mentioned that LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay was placed under house arrest, urging people to avoid attempting to join the march due to stringent security measures. He emphasized the importance of dialogue with the government over imposing restrictions.

Meanwhile, in Kargil, a large group led by KDA leaders, including co-chairman Asgar Ali Karbalai and Sajjad Kargili, conducted a peaceful march from Hussaini Park to the main bus stand, emphasizing their plea for statehood and safeguards under the sixth schedule. They welcomed the government’s decision to launch a judicial inquiry into the September 24 incident and demanded the unconditional release of detained individuals, including activist Sonam Wangchuk, along with fair compensation for the affected families.

Karbalai condemned the restrictions imposed on LAB leadership and residents in Leh, asserting that such actions are unwelcome among the peace-loving Ladakhi community. He stressed the need for compensation for victims and the release of detainees before resuming talks, emphasizing the importance of discussing statehood and extending the sixth schedule to Ladakh.

Karbalai expressed gratitude to the national civil society for their support and urged action against those defaming the people of Ladakh as anti-national. He highlighted the unwavering determination of Ladakhi people to pursue their legitimate demands through peaceful means and negotiations.
