Bhopal man dies by suicide as wife files dowry case after 30 years of marriage

A 52-year-old man died by suicide after his wife filed a dowry case against him, three decades after their marriage, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

The case was filed against the victim, Rajeev Giri, on January 26 by his wife, Janki. He had allegedly been deeply distressed since then.

He reportedly remained anxious and troubled for five days before consuming poison on February 1, leading to his death.

The couple had two children – a daughter who is married and a 25-year-old son.

While Rajeev was battling for his life in the hospital, his wife approached the police and filed another complaint against him, claiming that he had consumed poison to pressure her into withdrawing the dowry harassment case, according to senior police officer Ratan Singh Parihar.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, Parihar immediately sent a constable to the hospital to record Rajeev’s statement. However, doctors declared that Rajeev’s condition was critical, and he was unable to give any statement. Within half an hour, he died.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation into the matter.
