Amazon’s Unconventional Layoff Method Sparks Debate

Amazon employees were taken by surprise when they received text messages notifying them of their job eliminations. The notifications were sent early in the morning, marking a significant round of layoffs affecting approximately 14,000 individuals across various teams.

Screenshots examined by Business Insider revealed that Amazon sent two text messages to the impacted employees in quick succession. The first message instructed them to check their personal or work email before coming to the office, while the second provided a helpline number in case they did not receive an email regarding their job status. These texts were reportedly dispatched immediately after email notifications to prevent employees from reporting to work due to their deactivated badges.

The novel approach of using text messages to communicate layoffs has initiated discussions within and outside the company concerning the impersonal aspect of corporate restructuring. This method mirrors a growing trend observed in major tech companies like Google and Tesla, where employees have experienced sudden lockouts from systems without prior notice. Sources familiar with the situation informed Business Insider that the messages were crafted to avert confusion and prevent potentially uncomfortable scenarios at Amazon offices nationwide.

The recent workforce reductions at Amazon have predominantly impacted the company’s retail management teams, consistent with the trend of downsizing that commenced the previous year. Amazon stated that these measures are part of an ongoing initiative to streamline operations and expedite innovation.

Internally, Amazon’s Head of HR, Beth Galetti, assured affected employees that they would continue to receive full pay and benefits for 90 days, in addition to a severance package and access to job placement support. Galetti emphasized the company’s commitment to assisting employees through the transition, acknowledging the weight of the decisions made.

Galetti underscored the impact of artificial intelligence advancements on Amazon’s operations in a blog post, highlighting the transformative nature of AI technology in driving faster innovation. The company’s internal communication to employees outlined the layoff process and provided detailed instructions on the next steps, including restrictions on badge access and the commencement of a non-working period with continued compensation and benefits. Employees were directed to utilize Amazon’s internal tools for assistance, retrieval of personal items, and equipment returns.

Despite gearing up for a potentially record-breaking holiday quarter with sales projected to exceed $140 billion, Amazon faces the imperative of maintaining agility and cost-effectiveness amidst the expanding realm of AI-driven automation.
