Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer made a public appearance on Monday, November 10, sharing a picture from a beach vacation, marking his first outing since sustaining a severe spleen injury in a match in Australia last month. Expressing gratitude for the support received during his hospitalization, Iyer posted on Instagram, mentioning how the sun had been therapeutic for him.
Sporting a blue bucket hat and reflective sunglasses, the renowned batsman looked at ease during his beach holiday comeback. The incident leading to Iyer’s injury occurred on October 26 during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney when he landed awkwardly after attempting a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey. Initially believed to be a rib injury, further medical evaluation revealed a lacerated spleen causing internal bleeding, necessitating immediate medical attention.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an official statement detailing the seriousness of Iyer’s injury, mentioning the prompt identification and treatment of the laceration and internal bleeding. The cricketer underwent a minor procedure and received proper medical care in Sydney under the supervision of Dr. Kouroush Haghigi’s team and Indian specialist Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala.
India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, kept the public and teammates updated on Iyer’s recovery progress, confirming that he was doing well and staying in touch with well-wishers. It is anticipated that Iyer will be out of action for approximately three months, with no official timeline for his return. Consequently, he was not included in the squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, commencing on November 14 in Kolkata.
