“OpenAI Declares Red Alert Amidst Google Competition”

OpenAI is currently in a state of urgency known as Red Alert due to the competitive pressure it faces following the launch of Google’s Gemini 3 model. This has prompted CEO Sam Altman to declare a code red internally, directing staff to act swiftly on upcoming releases to address concerns about ChatGPT’s performance compared to Google’s AI model.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of applications, emphasized that the Red Alert aims to focus resources on ChatGPT and prioritize key tasks. Despite the link to Google’s model, Altman clarified that the urgency was not solely driven by Gemini 3, stating that addressing competitive threats promptly is crucial.

In response to the situation, OpenAI expedited the release of its latest AI model, GPT-5.2, positioning it as their most advanced model yet for professional use. The company highlighted significant improvements in tasks like spreadsheet creation, code writing, image interpretation, and managing complex contexts.

Beyond the model launch, OpenAI plans to concentrate on refining ChatGPT, enhancing performance, and speeding up development in the weeks ahead. The company is reallocating resources to strengthen its core product, focusing on AI model development while scaling back less critical projects.
