“Forward Ryan Williams Joins Indian Football Camp”

Indian national football team camp in Bengaluru welcomed Ryan Williams, a forward who transitioned from Australian to Indian citizenship, as confirmed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Sunday with head coach Khalid Jamil leading the team.

Coming from Perth, the 32-year-old forward, along with defender Jay Gupta, joined the camp. Bengaluru FC recently shared a video of Williams and Sunil Chhetri, highlighting Williams’ decision to change citizenship.

“Ryan Williams and Jay Gupta have joined the senior men’s national team camp in Bengaluru,” announced the AIFF on X.

Williams’ inclusion signifies a pivotal moment for Indian football. This week, AIFF invited two overseas players, Williams and Abneet Bharti, to the camp ahead of India’s AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh in Dhaka on November 18.

This move indicates a notable shift in the federation’s strategy, creating opportunities for Indian-origin players and those ready to give up foreign citizenship to represent India internationally.

The national camp commenced in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The ceremony for Williams’ citizenship change occurred at the Bengaluru FC training facility, where Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri presented him with his Indian documents. Williams, part of Bengaluru FC since 2023, described the moment as highly emotional.

“I am honored to officially acknowledge what has long felt true. I am grateful for the love, opportunities, and sense of belonging this country has offered me. The final round of interviews was particularly challenging. India, I am proud to be considered one of your own,” shared Williams in an Instagram post, acknowledging Chhetri’s involvement in the process.

Williams’ mother was born in Mumbai, while his father is from Kent, England. His decision makes him the second player of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) background eligible to play for the national team.

Prior to Williams, Izumi Arata, born in Japan, acquired Indian citizenship to represent the Blue Tigers in 2012, earning nine caps between 2013 and 2014.

Williams has previously played for Australia in the under-20 and under-23 teams and made his senior international debut in 2019 against South Korea as a second-half substitute. His club career includes stints with English clubs Fulham and Portsmouth before moving to the Indian Super League, where he has been a key player for Bengaluru FC.

With India gearing up for the AFC Asian Cup qualifier, Williams’ addition brings experience and a sense of rejuvenation — a unique case of a player prioritizing identity and belonging over convenience, marking a significant step for Indian football’s global aspirations.
