A daring US Air Force team ventured into the eye of the powerful Category 5 hurricane Melissa, defying nature’s wrath. Capturing astonishing footage of the storm’s unique “stadium effect,” they navigated the heart of one of nature’s most violent displays.
Known as the “Hurricane Hunters,” the crew flew into Melissa, set to hit Jamaica as the strongest storm recorded on the island since 1851, to gather crucial data for the National Hurricane Center. Melissa, the world’s most potent storm in 2025, was forecasted to head towards Cuba and then the Bahamas, with no expected impact on the US.
Numerous videos from the crew’s flight documented their journey. One clip showed the aircraft entering the storm from the southeast at sunrise. Another footage inside the eye captured the mesmerizing “stadium effect,” where the eyewall clouds curve outward, resembling a sports arena from above.
Additional videos showcased the hurricane in its awe-inspiring state before turning devastating upon landfall. The final video depicted the crew exiting the hurricane’s center after their fifth pass through Melissa.
As Melissa approached Jamaica, casualties were reported in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with Jamaica confirming three deaths. In preparation, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed his prayers for the impending storm’s impact.
Anticipating a storm surge of up to 13 feet, Kingston faced potential risks to critical infrastructure, with widespread power outages and damage reported ahead of the storm. Jamaica had not experienced a Category 4 or higher storm landfall in 174 years of recorded history, with Hurricane Gilbert being the last significant storm to hit in 1988.
Hurricanes Ivan and Beryl, both Category 4 storms, did not make landfall. The region braced for the impact of Melissa, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of natural disasters.
