Laura Loomer, known for her far-right views and association with US President Donald Trump, engaged in a heated exchange with British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan regarding his comments on Vice President JD Vance mocking New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani’s aunt.
Hasan criticized Vance for ridiculing “Brown people” despite being married to Usha Vance of Indian descent. In response, Loomer highlighted that the Vice President’s wife is not Muslim, suggesting that the support for a Muslim in the White House by MAGA supporters would be unlikely.
Continuing the discussion, Loomer emphasized that their concern was with Islam, not individuals of Brown ethnicity, praising Usha Vance as a successful Hindu American.
The dispute ignited when Mamdani, during a public appearance at a Bronx mosque, openly spoke about embracing his Muslim identity, recounting how his aunt refrained from using the subway post-9/11 due to safety concerns related to wearing a hijab.
JD Vance’s subsequent mocking of Mamdani’s remarks drew criticism from Hasan, who condemned Vance for belittling other Brown individuals while being in an interracial marriage and having mixed-race children.
This clash is not the first between Loomer and Mehdi Hasan, with a previous incident where Loomer targeted Hasan as a Muslim immigrant and urged him to return to his parents’ birth countries.
Hasan, with roots in Hyderabad, clarified that India, where his parents are from, is not an Islamic nation, dismissing Loomer’s derogatory comments as lacking knowledge and maturity.
