“Delays in Income Tax Refunds for Indian Taxpayers”

Many taxpayers in India are experiencing delays in receiving their income tax refunds for the financial year 2024–25. The Income Tax Department announced that certain refund claims are undergoing additional review due to being categorized as “high-value” or “red-flagged,” typically related to deductions requiring further scrutiny before approval. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) anticipates that all valid refunds will be disbursed by December 2025.

If you have filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) and are entitled to a refund, you can conveniently monitor its status online using your Permanent Account Number (PAN) via the e-Filing portal and the NSDL-TIN website. To ensure successful credit of the refund, it is essential to have pre-validated bank account details, accurate filing of returns, and e-verification of the ITR.

Tracking the refund status through the official e-filing portal involves logging in with your PAN and password to access your filed returns and review the refund status for the relevant Assessment Year. The portal provides information on the processing of the refund, the amount, payment mode, and issuance date if already processed.

Similarly, the NSDL-TIN website offers a straightforward method to track your refund by entering your PAN and selecting the Assessment Year to view refund details, such as release status, amount, and payment method (cheque or NEFT). As the Income Tax Department conducts its reviews, taxpayers are advised to stay updated by monitoring their refund status online to receive timely notifications.
