Xiaomi is preparing for a significant transformation in its manufacturing processes, as stated by the company’s CEO Lei Jun. Lei Jun emphasized that advancements in artificial intelligence are driving traditional industries towards a new era where human-like machines will progressively replace manually operated tasks. He mentioned that AI has evolved from being a supportive tool to becoming the central element in the redesign of future factories. Lei Jun illustrated this shift by highlighting Xiaomi’s electric vehicle plant, where they have implemented an X-ray system with an AI model based on vision technology. This system can now swiftly assess large die-cast structures used in vehicles within seconds, a significant improvement compared to the time-consuming and error-prone manual inspections.
The CEO anticipates that such advancements present substantial opportunities for automation-focused companies, projecting that the market could potentially reach a trillion yuan. However, Lei Jun emphasized the complexity of the industry, stating that collaboration through shared platforms and partnerships will be crucial for the next phase of AI integration.
Looking ahead, Lei Jun disclosed Xiaomi’s plan to integrate humanoid robots into their production lines within the next five years. These robots will assume physical tasks currently handled by human workers on assembly floors. He envisions a future where domestic robots will play a vital role in households, requiring enhanced capabilities to navigate complex environments and meet rigorous performance standards.
Additionally, Lei Jun stressed the importance of China’s industrial sector transitioning towards intelligent manufacturing to move away from dependence on low-cost labor. He believes that embracing intelligent manufacturing is essential for China to stay competitive in the global landscape of advanced production systems.
Over the years, Xiaomi has been progressively advancing its robotics, AI, and smart electric vehicle initiatives, starting with the introduction of its first humanoid robot, CyberOne, in 2022. With a strategic focus on next-generation automation technologies, Xiaomi aims to establish itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of manufacturing and artificial intelligence.
