Batting icon Sunil Gavaskar has revealed a touching proposal to commemorate India’s semi-final star Jemimah Rodrigues. The ex-India skipper expressed his desire to perform a musical duet with Jemimah if India triumphs over South Africa in the final of the Women’s World Cup in Navi Mumbai.
Gavaskar mentioned, “If India clinches the World Cup, she and I – pending her approval – will collaborate on a song. She’ll play her guitar, and I’ll sing along,” Gavaskar shared during an interview on Sports Today. “We previously did this impromptu performance at a BCCI awards event a few years back. There was a band playing, and we spontaneously joined in. She played the guitar, and I sang with my humble voice. But if India emerges victorious, I would love to repeat this moment – if she agrees to join in with an old man like me. I am completely onboard for it.”
The particular event Gavaskar referred to was the BCCI Naman Awards in 2024, where Gavaskar and Jemimah shared a heartwarming musical moment on stage. The audience was captivated by the impromptu duet, with Jemimah strumming her guitar and Gavaskar enchanting the crowd with his singing.
Now, there is a genuine opportunity for a repeat performance. Gavaskar’s promise of a musical collaboration with Jemimah has become a delightful subplot in India’s World Cup journey. Jemimah’s outstanding performance in the semi-final against Australia, scoring an unbeaten 127 off 134 deliveries, led India to a record-breaking chase. Their partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur, contributing 167 runs for the third wicket, propelled India to victory against Australia, ending their 15-match unbeaten streak at the World Cup and securing India’s spot in the final.
As India advances to face South Africa in the final, a new champion will be crowned. Should Harmanpreet’s team emerge victorious, fans can anticipate a special musical moment to commemorate the occasion – Jemimah playing her guitar, accompanied by Sunil Gavaskar lending his voice in celebration.
