“AI Chatbots: Digital Companions or Isolation Enablers for Teens?”

AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini are increasingly becoming more than just academic aids, evolving into digital companions for a rising number of adolescents. A recent study indicates that as these platforms advance in intelligence, speed, and accessibility, young individuals are turning to them not only for quick solutions but also for emotional solace. Nevertheless, this growing reliance is silently leading to a sense of isolation among the younger demographic.

The latest Generation Isolation 2025 report from UK youth charity OnSide, which surveyed over 5,000 youths aged 11 to 18, reveals that 39 percent, almost two in five, have resorted to AI chatbots for guidance, assistance, or companionship. The study indicates a higher utilization rate among older teenagers, with over half of 18-year-olds depending on AI for advice. Additionally, boys showed slightly higher engagement compared to girls.

The study emphasizes the increasing emotional connection with AI. Teens are not limited to seeking help from chatbots solely for educational or practical information; many are now seeking emotional or social counsel. Around 14 percent acknowledged seeking assistance regarding friendships, 11 percent for mental health issues, and 12 percent simply for companionship. More than half of young AI users admitted relying on chatbots for various forms of advice, whether related to stress, emotions, or everyday problems.

Factors such as speed, curiosity, and anonymity are suggested as reasons for this trend. Nearly one in five respondents mentioned that conversing with AI felt more comfortable than confiding in a real person.

Despite the escalating dependence, trust in AI remains notably low. The study indicates that only a small proportion of young individuals express more trust in AI than in humans. This indicates that while teenagers are turning to AI for emotional support, they do not perceive it as a replacement for genuine human connection.

The report also sheds light on the broader context influencing these behaviors. With an increased reliance on chatbots, teenagers’ screen time is on the rise, with 76 percent admitting to spending most of their leisure time on digital devices, and nearly half spending this time in solitude in their bedrooms. Despite the convenience of social media and messaging platforms for staying connected, many teenagers still yearn for face-to-face interactions. Nearly half of the surveyed individuals expressed that spending time together physically makes them feel most connected to their friends, surpassing the impact of messaging or voice calls.

One alarming revelation from the study is the pervasive levels of loneliness among young people. More than a third reported high or very high levels of loneliness, often stemming from challenges in making friends, feeling excluded, or lacking safe and welcoming social environments. While AI tools may offer immediate comfort, experts caution that excessive reliance on chatbots could have enduring implications on emotional development. The American Psychological Association has also warned that children and teenagers may lack the experience to assess the risks of using AI as an emotional outlet.
