Mumbai Indians (MI) have decisively put an end to the swirling speculations surrounding their former skipper Rohit Sharma’s rumored trade to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The buzz started after KKR appointed Abhishek Nayar as their new head coach, replacing Chandrakant Pandit. Nayar shares a close bond with Rohit, having guided and trained with him during his comeback to international cricket earlier this year. This connection sparked fan curiosity about a potential reunion in KKR colors.
Nevertheless, MI’s social media team swiftly dispelled the talks with a smart post on X (formerly Twitter). The franchise playfully hinted that while the sun would rise again, a move to the Knight Riders was “not just difficult, but impossible.”
Rohit Sharma has been synonymous with the Mumbai Indians since he joined the franchise in 2011. Leading the team, MI achieved remarkable success in the IPL, securing five titles and fostering a winning ethos centered on composed leadership and reliability.
In the 2023 season, a significant shift occurred as Hardik Pandya returned to MI from the Gujarat Titans, assuming the captain’s role. Rohit transitioned into a senior batsman and mentor within the squad. With the Impact Player rule’s introduction, he has occasionally been subbed in and out of games, sparking rumors of internal discord, though no concrete evidence has emerged.
On the global stage, Rohit recently retired from T20Is after steering India to a historic T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados, triumphing over South Africa in a gripping final. Earlier this year, he bid adieu to Test cricket post the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, focusing on ODIs.
In the latest ODI series against Australia, Rohit displayed his trademark style, notching a fluent half-century in the second match and a classy century in the final encounter, despite India’s series loss.
For now, MI enthusiasts can breathe easy knowing their beloved ‘Hitman’ will be staying put with the team.
