South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt showcased an outstanding performance in the Women’s World Cup semi-final against England on October 29th in Guwahati. The 26-year-old captain’s remarkable innings of 169 runs on a challenging Barsapara Stadium pitch made her the first captain to score a century in a knockout match in the Women’s World Cup. Though falling just short of a double hundred, Wolvaardt’s exceptional display with the bat propelled South Africa to a commanding total of 319 for 7, putting them on the cusp of a historic final berth.
Wolvaardt narrowly missed out on surpassing Harmanpreet Kaur’s record of 171 runs, the highest individual score in a Women’s World Cup knockout game. Her aggressive yet composed batting style throughout the tournament culminated in this dominant performance in the semi-final, earning her a place among the top scorers in Women’s World Cup history.
Additionally, Wolvaardt equaled the record for the most fifty-plus scores in Women’s World Cup history with her 13th half-century, which she converted into a match-winning century of exceptional quality. She achieved another milestone by becoming the first South African batter to surpass 1,000 runs in Women’s World Cup matches and the first player to exceed 400 runs in the current edition of the tournament in India.
Supported by Tazmin Brits, who contributed a steady 45 runs, Wolvaardt led South Africa with an impressive 116-run opening partnership. Despite England’s efforts to break their momentum, Wolvaardt, along with Marizanne Kapp, stabilized the innings with a crucial 72-run partnership. Chloe Tryon’s quick cameo further boosted South Africa’s total, showcasing their strong batting depth.
Wolvaardt accelerated her scoring after reaching the century milestone, adding 69 runs in just 28 deliveries before being dismissed by Lauren Bell. Her aggressive approach in the death overs, particularly against Linsey Smith’s bowling, demonstrated her dominance with the bat.
South Africa’s remarkable turnaround from a low total in their previous game against Australia showcased their resilience and determination in the semi-final clash. Wolvaardt’s exceptional innings will be remembered as one of the standout performances in Women’s World Cup history, highlighting her skill and contribution to her team’s success.
