India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalized in Sydney and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to internal bleeding caused by a rib cage injury sustained during the third match against Australia.
Iyer, who made a remarkable catch to dismiss Alex Carey, appeared to injure his left rib cage in the process and was promptly taken to the hospital after the match.
“He has been in the ICU for the past few days. Following the medical reports, internal bleeding was identified, leading to his immediate admission,” a source familiar with the situation revealed.
The BCCI medical team acted swiftly when Iyer’s condition fluctuated upon his return to the dressing room, ensuring he received prompt medical attention.
Initially anticipated to be out of action for about three weeks, Iyer’s recovery timeline may be extended due to the internal bleeding. His return to competitive cricket remains uncertain at this point.
The 31-year-old is expected to remain in the Sydney hospital for at least a week before being cleared to return to India. Iyer is not part of India’s T20 squad.
