A key revision requires developers to transparently disclose any sharing of user data with third-party AI services and obtain explicit consent before proceeding. The tech giant is also intensifying its crackdown on copycat apps, urging developers to prioritize originality amidst a surge of imitations following major releases. Here’s a breakdown of the latest updates:

One significant update revolves around a new privacy mandate outlined in guideline 5.1.2(i). Apple now mandates developers to clearly specify the destination of user data, particularly when AI models or AI-driven platforms are involved. Users must be informed in plain language and actively agree if an app intends to transmit personal information to an external AI service. As AI integrations become more prevalent in various app categories, concerns over consent and sensitive data handling have escalated.

Another crucial aspect of the update focuses on Apple’s ongoing efforts to weed out look-alike apps from the App Store. A fresh addition to the anti-copycat section explicitly prohibits developers from using another developer’s app name, brand, or icon without explicit authorization. This measure follows a surge of copycat versions of Sora 2 flooding the App Store, capitalizing on the popularity of OpenAI’s official app. Apple swiftly took action to remove or rename these clones, underscoring how quickly such replicas can confuse users and disrupt search results.

In addition to these headline changes, Apple has introduced various updates across different sections of the App Review Guidelines. Apps targeting creators now need mechanisms to flag content surpassing their age ratings and restrict access behind verified age gates. This requirement extends to mini apps and mini games operating through HTML5 or JavaScript containers, with Apple confirming full guideline coverage for these platforms.

Furthermore, loan-related apps now face clearer restrictions, including a cap on annual percentage rates below 36% and mandatory repayment terms exceeding 60 days. Crypto exchanges have been categorized under highly regulated fields, subjecting developers in this sector to stricter compliance protocols.

Apple has also eliminated outdated language discouraging apps from featuring empty ad banners or test ads, indicating a shift in policy. Additional clarifications highlight that apps offering external software not embedded in the binary must obtain Apple’s approval before accessing native APIs, in line with the age-based content restrictions mentioned earlier.
