“Singapore’s Little India Shines Bright for Diwali Festivities”

Singapore’s Little India is currently buzzing with activity as the local Indian community ushers in the festive season of Diwali. The vibrant streets are adorned with colorful decorations, creating a lively atmosphere in the traditional district filled with Indian shops and restaurants. Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is celebrated in Singapore with great fervor, on par with other major festivals like Christmas, Chinese New Year, and Eid. This cultural celebration highlights Singapore’s rich diversity and harmonious blend of traditions.

Comprising about 10% of the population, Indians are the third-largest ethnic group in Singapore, with approximately 57% of them practicing Hinduism. The Diwali festivities in Singapore are a collaborative effort involving the Indian community, multicultural groups, and government representatives. This year, Diwali falls on October 20 and is observed as a public holiday across the nation. Various Hindu and Sikh temples throughout Singapore will host special prayers, communal feasts, and cultural activities to mark the occasion.

Minister Indranee Rajah has taken the lead in organizing the celebrations, spearheading a unique project that gathered over 300 sarees of diverse fabrics from different regions of the island at a community center. Residents, along with organizations such as the Indian Women’s Association Singapore and the Bengali Association Singapore, actively participated in this initiative. Minister Rajah emphasized the significance of the sarees as symbols of cultural heritage, uniting the community in a joyous celebration.

The sarees collected will be distributed to various groups, including residents of old-age homes, domestic workers, and even individuals in India and Malaysia. This charitable endeavor aims to spread the spirit of Diwali beyond Singapore’s borders, fostering goodwill and solidarity among diverse communities.
