The West Bengal Police apprehended Wasif Ali, a classmate of the medical student who was with her on the night she was sexually assaulted in a forest in the Durgapur area. Ali, considered the main culprit in the case, is facing charges following the incident involving the 23-year-old medical student from Jaleswar, Odisha.
The victim was reportedly taken into a forest near her college, where she was threatened and assaulted on Friday night. Ali was implicated in the case by the survivor’s father and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
The survivor, accompanied by Ali, returned to the hostel after the assault, prompting police scrutiny of him since the incident. Following a thorough investigation at the crime scene with the survivor’s classmate, law enforcement collected substantial evidence leading to Ali’s arrest, marking the sixth individual detained in connection with the case.
Authorities have ruled out gang rape, confirming that the survivor was sexually assaulted by a single perpetrator based on her statement and initial physical evidence. The ongoing probe involves questioning all six arrested suspects and examining various aspects of the case.
The survivor recounted the harrowing experience of being chased by several men while out for dinner with her friend, leading to her abduction into the forest. She described being threatened by the assailants and forced into submission, as revealed in her statement to medical personnel.
The police commissioner emphasized the ongoing investigation and the involvement of all arrested individuals in the case. The survivor’s mobile phone, along with details of her friend’s appearance and clothing, have been recovered, aiding in reconstructing the sequence of events. Suspicion also surrounds the role of the friend, who remains under scrutiny and is being interrogated by authorities.
