“Engineer fatally beaten by police over Rs 10,000 in Bhopal”

A tragic incident unfolded during a beer gathering in Bhopal, where a 22-year-old engineer was fatally beaten by two police officers after he refused to pay them Rs 10,000. The distressing event occurred in Bhopal’s Indrapuri locality, leaving the victim’s family in anguish and demanding justice while the culprits remain at large.

Udit, who had recently secured a job post his engineering graduation, had returned to Bhopal. On the ill-fated Thursday, he visited his college in Sehore with friends to collect his degree certificate, essential for his new job, unaware that it would be his final trip.

The police intervened as Udit celebrated his job with friends, demanding money from them. When Udit, who is related to a Deputy Superintendent of Police in another Madhya Pradesh city, resisted, the officers stripped and brutally assaulted him with sticks. Following the attack, the policemen fled the scene.

Witnesses reported the officers stripping Udit and viciously beating him with sticks, leading him to vomit. His friends rushed him to a local hospital, from where he was referred to AIIMS, but he was declared dead upon arrival.

Footage obtained by India Today TV shows a policeman wielding a stick walking with the victim shirtless in a parking lot alongside a black car. Another officer joins in, and as friends engage with the cops, one officer strikes the victim with a stick while the other hits him from behind.

Expressing doubt about a fair police-led inquiry, Udit’s father, an assistant engineer, advocated for an external agency like the SIT or CBI to conduct a thorough investigation. He emphasized the need for transparent handling of crucial evidence, including CCTV footage, to prevent interference in the probe.

State Congress president Jitu Patwari condemned the police’s inaction, criticizing the government’s insensitivity towards the grieving family. The Congress party demanded immediate financial support for the family and expedited efforts to apprehend the suspended constables.

Despite being relieved of their duties, the absconding officers have evaded capture, with authorities confirming ongoing investigations through video evidence and statements from Udit’s friends, who are key witnesses to the incident.

A preliminary post-mortem report revealed traumatic hemorrhagic pancreatitis as the cause of Udit’s death, indicating severe internal injuries from repeated blunt-force trauma. A murder case has been registered, and investigative teams are actively pursuing the suspects, although no arrests have been made yet.
