“Three Arrested in Durgapur Medical Student Gang-Rape Case”

The West Bengal police have apprehended three individuals in connection with the gang-rape incident involving a medical student near a private hospital in Durgapur. The arrested suspects are identified as Sheikh Riaz Uddin, Sheikh Firdaush, and Appu, while two other suspects are currently evading arrest.

The victim, a second-year MBBS student from a private medical college near Shobhapur in Durgapur, was sexually assaulted on Friday night behind the hospital premises. The student, hailing from Jaleswar in Odisha, was assaulted after leaving the campus around 8:30 pm with a male companion.

Local authorities responded promptly to the incident, launching an investigation and providing medical care to the victim at a nearby hospital. The case has drawn parallels to the tragic 2024 RG Kar Medical College incident, leading to widespread protests.

Police are interrogating multiple individuals, including college staff and the male companion of the student. CCTV footage and campus security measures are also under review. A hospital spokesperson confirmed that both the male and female students involved were preparing for their second-year exams.

The West Bengal Doctors’ Front has condemned the crime, highlighting the ongoing safety concerns for women within educational institutions. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi expressed deep concern and assured support for the victim’s family.

In response to the incident, the BJP criticized the TMC government for failing to uphold law and order in West Bengal. TMC leader Shashi Panja dismissed the political accusations, emphasizing the ongoing police investigation. Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav also underscored the need for accountability in addressing rising crimes against women nationally.

The situation continues to unfold, with different political parties engaging in a discourse surrounding women’s safety and the need for effective governance.
