“Espionage Suspected in Nobel Peace Prize Leak”

The Nobel Institute hinted at a probable espionage connection to a potential leak before the Nobel Peace Prize announcement for Maria Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition leader. The institute’s statement to Norway’s TV2, as reported by news agency AFP, suggested a high likelihood of espionage involvement.

Although the official announcement of the award came on Friday at around 10 am local time, unusual betting activities surfaced late Thursday on Polymarket, an online prediction market. Betting on Machado notably increased, leading to her odds spiking to over 73% shortly after midnight.

This sudden surge in wagers raised suspicions as media outlets and experts had not highlighted Machado as a frontrunner before the announcement, prompting concerns about a possible leak of confidential information.

Briefly, for 45 minutes, the odds for Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition figure Aleksei A Navalny, experienced a slight rise. However, Machado’s chances climbed again after 3 am and remained high until the official declaration, according to AFP.

Kristian Berg Harpviken, the director of the Nobel Institute and secretary of the Nobel Committee, stated to TV2 that the institute would look into the unusual activity, emphasizing the need to enhance security measures if necessary. Harpviken acknowledged the potential impression of an insider leak due to espionage activities but highlighted the unlikelihood of deliberate leaks. He mentioned the Nobel Institute’s historical susceptibility to espionage while refraining from definitive conclusions.

In contrast, Nobel Committee chairman Jorgen Watne Frydnes dismissed the notion of an internal breach, asserting that leaks had not occurred in the prize’s entire history. Frydnes made this statement to NTB news agency.

Maria Corina Machado, previously barred from the 2024 presidential race in Venezuela, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless advocacy for democratic rights in Venezuela and her efforts towards a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Conversely, Donald Trump’s pursuit of the Nobel Peace Prize came to a halt after Machado received the award. Trump’s aspirations to join the likes of Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama were dashed following the announcement. Trump had claimed credit for ending “eight wars.”
