“Pakistan and Afghanistan Clash in Fierce Military Confrontation”

Fresh tensions have erupted between Pakistan and Afghanistan, escalating into a fierce military confrontation. Kabul accused Islamabad of launching airstrikes on its territory on October 9, causing significant damage. Pakistan justified the strikes as targeting Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants based in Afghan safe havens.

While the Taliban claimed to have killed 58 Pakistani soldiers in retaliatory strikes, Pakistan reported eliminating 200 TTP militants, claiming victory over Afghan forces. This spike in cross-border tensions coincided with Taliban Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit to India, possibly unsettling Islamabad as New Delhi expanded its Afghan engagement.

Recent developments in the conflict include the Taliban’s claim of killing Pakistani soldiers, urging Pakistan to expel ISIS members hiding on its soil. Pakistan, in response, seized Afghan military posts and alleged unprovoked attacks by Afghan forces. The Pakistani military reported neutralizing over 200 Taliban and affiliated militants in clashes but lacked independent verification.

The situation worsened as Afghan civilian casualties occurred due to Pakistani mortar strikes, and Pakistani drones targeted an Afghan district without a Taliban government response. Pakistani officials condemned Afghan aggression, labeling it a breach of international laws, while vowing strong defensive actions. Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister disputed TTP presence in Afghanistan, attributing blame to Islamabad.

Former US envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, highlighted the dangerous escalation between Pakistan and Afghanistan, advocating for negotiations. The conflict poses significant risks, requiring diplomatic resolutions to ease tensions.
