Trump Criticizes Spain’s NATO Spending; Defends Response

Spain has disregarded recent comments made by US President Donald Trump regarding Madrid’s defense spending in his criticism of NATO members who spend less. During a press conference with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Trump labeled Spain as a “laggard” within NATO and suggested the country should be expelled from the alliance for not meeting military spending targets.

Trump’s statements are part of his renewed efforts to push NATO allies to increase defense spending, advocating for a target of 5% of GDP, significantly higher than the current alliance standard of 2%. Spain, the only NATO member out of 32 not to adopt the higher target, had previously secured an exemption in June, arguing that a commitment of 2.1% was adequate for its position as the eurozone’s fourth-largest economy, facing opposition to increased military budgets from its left-wing coalition.

In response to Trump’s remarks, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles defended Spain’s record, emphasizing that the country remains a loyal and dedicated NATO ally. Despite being among the lowest spenders in NATO, allocating just 1.28% of GDP to defense last year, Spain has actively participated in NATO missions, deploying troops to various countries and providing support to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.

Since joining NATO in 1982 and integrating into its military command in 1999, Spain has maintained its commitment to the alliance, emphasizing that its contribution extends beyond financial figures. Madrid highlights its operational support, troop deployments, and role in ensuring political stability within NATO’s southern flank.

The Spanish government’s stance reflects a strategic approach to NATO cooperation, balancing financial constraints with active involvement in alliance activities.
