AAP leader demands concrete action after IPS officer’s tragic suicide

AAP leader Sanjay Singh criticized the Haryana authorities for perpetuating caste-based humiliation and urged immediate, concrete actions following the tragic suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. Speaking during a television debate, Singh emphasized that the officer was subjected to relentless mental harassment, leading to his decision to end his life, highlighting that the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was insufficient.

Singh asserted that Puran Kumar’s suicide was a result of his Dalit background and disclosed instances where the officer was barred from entering the temple at his police station, faced casteist insults, unwarranted FIRs, and was denied leave to attend his father’s funeral, intensifying his emotional distress. He underscored the severe mental anguish the officer must have endured before taking such drastic action.

Furthermore, Singh criticized the lack of substantial action following the incident, emphasizing that mere establishment of an SIT was not synonymous with justice. He expressed concerns about the safety of Dalit individuals within the government and warned against the misuse of political power to undermine the Constitution and democracy. Singh called for immediate steps such as filing FIRs, making arrests where necessary, suspending involved officers, ensuring security for the grieving family, and implementing stricter measures against hate speech.

The AAP leader stressed the importance of curbing hate speech as a primary step and encouraged public input on additional preventive measures to avert similar tragedies. His remarks echoed the growing demand for accountability and safeguards against caste-based discrimination within state institutions following the officer’s demise, with calls for a transparent investigation and enhanced protections against such forms of humiliation.

This outcry for justice and reform resonates with families and civil society, underscoring the urgency for a thorough and transparent probe into the circumstances surrounding the IPS officer’s death and the need to address systemic issues of caste-based discrimination and harassment within governmental structures.
