Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia: Wikipedia Rival

Tech mogul Elon Musk has introduced his own AI-powered online reference tool named Grokipedia. This innovative platform poses a direct challenge to the well-established Wikipedia but with distinct differences. Grokipedia, envisioned as an alternative to Wikipedia by Musk, was developed in response to his criticism of what he perceives as a ‘left-wing bias’ within Wikipedia.

Grokipedia v0.1 is now accessible online for free, although it currently offers a smaller collection of articles compared to Wikipedia. Before contemplating a switch to Musk’s AI-driven encyclopedia, here are some key points to consider.

1. Human Input vs AI:
Wikipedia thrives on contributions from millions of human volunteers who create, edit, and validate articles, making it one of the largest online information repositories with 123 million monthly active users as of October 2025. In contrast, Grokipedia relies solely on artificial intelligence from Elon Musk’s xAI firm. The platform utilizes xAi’s AI chatbot Grok to produce articles and fact-check. While Grok leverages information from Wikipedia under a Creative Commons license, it operates autonomously.

2. Editing Process:
Wikipedia offers a straightforward editing system where anyone can modify content on a page, subject to verification by editors and automated checks. Grokipedia, however, does not allow direct edits by users. Instead, individuals can propose changes through an on-screen feedback form, with approved submissions reflected in the See Edits section on the website.

3. Article Count:
Wikipedia boasts a vast repository with 209 million pages across its editions, while Grokipedia currently features approximately 885,000 pages in its initial version (v0.1). Elon Musk has expressed plans for significant improvements in Grokipedia v1.

4. Language Support:
While Wikipedia caters to 343 languages, Grokipedia currently supports 47 languages, reflecting a more limited linguistic scope.

5. Business Model:
Wikipedia operates under the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, relying on donations and grants for sustainability. In contrast, Grokipedia forms part of xAI, a for-profit venture established by Elon Musk in 2023.

Elon Musk’s foray into the digital encyclopedia realm with Grokipedia signifies a potential shift in the landscape of online information resources, offering users an alternative to the established Wikipedia platform.
