Mohammed Shami delivered an impressive performance that led Bengal to victory over Uttarakhand in the Ranji Trophy, making a statement to BCCI Chief selector Ajit Agarkar in the process. Shami claimed four crucial wickets, setting the stage for Bengal’s triumph on October 18.
Starting the final day’s play at a commanding position of 165 for two, with skipper Kunal Chandela not out on 68 and Bhupen Lalwani on 12, Uttarakhand’s batting lineup faltered as Shami found his rhythm. Shami exploited the morning conditions effectively, finishing with figures of four for 38 from 24.4 overs. Akash Deep and Ishan Porel also contributed by taking two wickets each as Uttarakhand was bundled out for 265 runs.
Shami initiated the collapse by dismissing Chandela for 72, followed by Abhay Negi, Janmejay Joshi, and Rajan Kumar, dismantling the visitors’ innings. Despite efforts from Prashant Chopra (82) and Chandela, Uttarakhand could only manage 265 runs after being 173 for two. In pursuit of 156 runs for victory, Bengal comfortably chased down the target in 29.3 overs, with skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran leading the charge with a stylish 71 off 82 balls, guiding his team to the top of the standings with six points.
Sudip Kumar Gharami contributed a rapid 46, while Vishal Bhati remained unbeaten on 16 to seal Bengal’s win. Additionally, Shami’s recent exchanges with Agarkar, regarding his exclusion from the Australia tour, have been in the spotlight. Shami expressed his displeasure at the lack of communication regarding his omission, while Agarkar cited fitness concerns for the decision. Responding to Agarkar’s comments, Shami emphasized his on-field performance, stating, “Let him say whatever he wants. You have seen how I bowled. It is all in front of your eyes.”
This development adds an intriguing layer to Shami’s performance in the Ranji Trophy and his ongoing interactions with Agarkar.
